Cada 6 de mayo se celebra el Día Mundial de la Filatelia, para conmemorar al sello postal como sistema para el franqueo de correspondencia.

Asimismo, se rinde homenaje a los coleccionistas de estampillas, timbres y sellos postales (filatelistas) que hoy en día mantienen vigente este pasatiempo tan peculiar.

La Filatelia es definida como el arte de coleccionar, clasificar, comprar y/o vender sellos, sobres y otros documentos postales, así como el estudio de la historia postal. Proviene de los vocablos griegos Philos (que significa amante, afición, amor) y Atelia (que dignifica pagao previamente o de antemano).

a creación del Día Mundial de la Filatelia surgió en conmemoración a la primera estampilla de la historia postal: el Penny Black o Penique Negro. Fue emitida por La Gran Bretaña el 1° de mayo de 1840 y comenzó a circular el 6 de mayo de ese mismo año.

Asimismo, esta efeméride rinde homenaje al creador de la Filatelia, Rowland Hill.
